The Bathroom: Deep cleaning

The bathroom - Deep cleaning

As with all your other room you will need to clean the ceiling well, with bleach and water, soap and water, or your favorite mildew killer in the bathroom would be great. Cleaning the ceiling is something you need to do monthly in the bathroom to kill off bacteria, mold and mildew no matter what type of ceiling you have.

Exhaust fans on the ceiling or somewhere in the bathroom on the walls are going to nee taken down and cleaned. This area collects dust like crazy, and if you are a smoker or if the bathroom is near the kitchen, nicotine and grease will accumulate in this area as well. Cleaning out the exhaust fan in the bathroom doesn’t take long but should be added to your deep cleaning list when possible.

Lights are often intermingled with the exhaust fan, and sometime you have a light bar in the bathroom that will need cleaned as well. Polishing the light bar (wood or stainless) does not have to be done that often which is why it is on the deep cleaning list. Dusting off the light bulbs when they are cool is suggested, because hot light bulbs will often break when you try to dust them off.

Walls in the bathroom are going to need a deep cleaning every month. The walls in the bathroom are always moist and can grow all types of bacteria, molds, and soap scum builds up. To cut through all that grime you will need stronger cleaner, bleach, vinegar, and bathroom cleaner, pine sol, lysol and so on. Do not forget the type of cleaner will depend on the type of walls you have.

Marlite walls can be washed down with bleach and water or a good non-scratching type of cleaner. Ceramic is going to need a deep cleaner to kill off bacteria and germs in the grout.

Paneling sometimes is still in the bathroom and will need a good coat of polish or oil to keep the moisture out, for a great shine. Deep cleaning your bathroom walls will take a bit of your time but it really is worth all the effort for a great smell and a shining gleam.

While you are washing down the walls in your bathroom, your tub and shower will need a good deep cleaning with a scrub brush and the best cleaner you have to work with.

After you know you have taken all the soap scum and crud off your fiberglass shower, you can wax it as you would your car. Wax on and wax off, this will give you a great deep shine that will make your tub or shower easier to clean all month long. You only need to wax the tub or shower every five or six months to keep it gleaming clean.

Rugs in the bathroom need cleaned about once a month, sometimes more often depending on how many people are living in your home. Rugs can be put in the washer and hung on the line to dry.  Try not to put your bathroom rugs in the dryer because the rubber backing on the rugs are going to eventually break down. The more often you put your rugs in the dryer, the faster you are going to have to replace those rugs. The heat dries out and breaks down the rubber, leaving little pieces all over your flooring as it dries out creating a mess.

Deep cleaning is more than the walls and the flooring in your bathroom, you also will need to clean out the laundry hamper, inside and out during those deep cleaning sessions. Wiping out your hamper will keep it fresh smelling longer. This needs done at least once a month.

What about that scale in the bathroom, when is the last time you cleaned it well? Is it starting to look a little rough? Wiping down the scale in the bathroom, at least once a month will keep hair, dirt, and just plain yucky stuff from growing on the scale.

You can wipe down the scales with just about any cleaner you are using in the bathroom. If you have an electronic scale you have to be a little more careful about how much moisture, you are getting on it so you will just want to be more careful.

Wall hangings and clocks in the bathroom need cleaned when you are cleaning the walls in the bathroom. Dust can build up on the wall hangings and mirrors. Using window cleaner works best on most items. If you have dried flower or silk flower arrangements, you can shake them in a bag of salt to remove just about all the dust without having to remove the flowers from their arrangement. The salt rubs off the dirt, and the salt falls off the arrangement to leave it clean.

Depending on how bad your bathroom really is, taking a toothbrush the corners of the bathtub, to the corners of the flooring, and along the flooring around the cabinet with a bacteria or mold killing cleaner will keep the black stuff from growing back where it really should not be.

If you do have black mold growing in your bathroom, you have too much moisture and need to install a fan or find a way for more moisture to escape your bathroom.
