The Cleaning Book Clean til' it gleams

The Kitchen: Vents

The kitchen – Heat and A/C vents

The vents in your kitchen that lead back to your furnace or possibly from the stove out through the house need upkeep. When you are sweeping the kitchen with your vacuum, vacuum around and in the vents or registers as much as possible. When you keep the dirt and pet hair from clinging to and in these vents you will keep odors from starting and you will keep the quality of air in your home at a high level.

For your deep cleaning sessions, you will have to take the vents and registers off and sweeps inside the ducts when possible. Over a few months, and with a few pets, lots of hair and dirt can accumulate inside of these vents.

You can put filters in them to keep the dirt from flowing through your home, and this will cut down on odors too. You can wash most of these filters off and continue using them if you want. Wiping the insides of your vents and register out with a bleach and water solution or a soap and water solution will help cut back on grease which can get smelly after a while too.
